HEADLINES! The Rest of the Story...
The problem goes something like this: A big story breaks. It's everywhere from TMZ.com to the New York Times, and within days it is as stale as a 24-hour old New Orleans French bread. We news junkies get bored easily, and unless some crackerjack Lois Lane type can come up with something new and really, really hot, we're on to the next big thing.
Now that I have my own ranting arena, I'm going to turn you on to the follow-up details on some of the irresistable stories of the day. For example, did you know that Cindy McCain was not always the fashion forward gal you have seen this year? That Joe the Plumber now has an agent and has an eye on a country and western music career? That The Donald is still trying to bail Ed McMahon out his mortgage mess?
Watch the blog periodically for "The Rest of the Story..." where I'll keep you juiced on the who, what and where stories that you almost forgot about.
So...Here's rest of some of this week's top stories:
The Jennifer Hudson Family Murders: As it turns out, it looks like the nephew of singer/actress Jennifer Hudson was still alive after his grandmother and uncle were murdered. Police say now that the boy was actually murdered in the SUV where his body was found.
Steve Fossett's remains found: Investigators have found human remains that appear to be those of adventurer Steve Fossett, who has been missing since September 2007.
Barack Obama's Aunti Zeituni lives in a Boston public housing project. But you knew that. What you may not have heard is that she is in this country illegally.
After Senator Elizabeth Dole labeled her church-elder opponent, Kay Hagan "Godless," Hagan filed a defmation of character suit against Dole.
Nebraska's Safe Haven Law, a law designed to protect newborns who might otherwise be abandoned,is probably up for some retooling. It seems frustrated parents have been dropping their wayward teens off at area hospitals and simply leaving. Before you check Mapquest for directions to Omaha, watch this.
Hey...Whatever happened to.....
John and Elizabeth Edwards disappeared from the media radar screen on or about August 9, 2008. That was one day after Edwards, the All-American Presidential candidate with the matinee idol looks, admitted to an extra-marital affair with one Rielle Hunter. Hunter, as it turned out, had given birth to a baby some months earlier. Edwards was caught by the National Enquirer visiting his paramour and her spawn at a Los Angeles hotel. When the photographer from the Enquirer focused his lens on the candidate, he ran into a men's bathroom and hid out. Pretty trashy all around.
Edwards essentially committed career suicide by owning up to the affair in the modern day, high tech version of the town square -- network television. His appearance on ABC News was about the last time we saw him. Elizabeth Edwards, who reportedly battles inoperable cancer, was the subject of a heart-wrenching cover story in People Magazine. Shortly after that story, we stopped hearing much about either Edwards.
Until this week, that is.
This week we learned of the death of prominent Democratic fundraiser Fred Barron, who succumbed to cancer at 61. Barron was the well-healed Texas attorney who admitted sending money to Rielle Hunter. He had been the national finance chairman for the Edwards Presidential campaign. He claimed Edwards had no involvement with the payments, which reportedly went toward quietly resettling Rielle in California.
Also this week, the New York Post reports that Edwards, now 55, is no longer living with his wife and family, and that Elizabeth Edwards was seen at an event Monday night, looking a bit worse for the wear, and not wearing her wedding ring.
Will John Edwards re-emerge on the national political scene? Is he the true babydaddy to Rielle's child? Has the scandal and its ensuing avalanche of bad press weakened Elizabeth Edwards' resolve and compromised her already fragile health?
I am just nosey enough to keep my eye on this story and I will keep you posted, because you are just nosey enough to want to know more.
And so it begins...
I suppose down the road this blog will become semi-substantive, but today...well, today I think we'll just begin by letting someone else rant. I stumbled across this video and started forwarding it to everybody I know. Wouldn't you? Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce two of the coolest people I've never met? Here are Howie & Julie:
